Apparently, the end of the holiday season does not spell the end of shopping season in
the telecom industry. On January 22, Toronto Hydro Corporation issued a statement
of its intentions to solicit expressions of interest for its telecom arm Toronto Hydro
Telecom (THT).
This paper explores what is on offer, what the implications of such a move may be, to
whom the company, the assets and the business may be of interest, and our suggestions
about what the City of Toronto may wish to consider when it evaluates bids.
We then go on to consider what this latest “for sale” sign means to the Canadian
Utility Telecom (uTelco) community.
The City of Toronto, through its wholly owned subsidiary, Toronto Hydro Corporation,
appears to have elected to divest itself of its controversial asset, Toronto Hydro
Telecom. THT is a company with a record of innovation. Although it possesses many attributes
that contributes to its financial valuation -- its true value will lie in the eye of the
beholder.
